Heat Pump Installations

Heat pumps are a great opportunity for centralized cooling with the added bonus of effective heating. Efficient, clean, and quiet, this system minimizes energy usage and running costs while achieving exceptional comfort. Heat pumps transfer existing heat rather than burn fossil fuels to create it, they work to minimize carbon footprint and avoid concerns with greenhouse gases.

Heat Pumps Today

2023: A Pivotal Year in Home Heating Transition

2023 marks the beginning of the most significant shift in residential heating since the rollout of neighborhood natural gas distribution. The term “Heat Pump” is rapidly becoming familiar among Toronto homeowners seeking to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

While fully electric heat pumps are emerging as a solution for homes with lower heating needs, the majority of systems that are both available and practical today are Gas/Electric Hybrid configurations. Think of the heat pump as a first stage of heating before your traditional gas equipment activates.

For forced-air homes, central air-to-air heat pump “Hybrid” units replace outdoor central air conditioners and provide the initial stage of heating alongside a gas furnace. In homes with boiler systems, ductless air-to-air heat pumps can supplement existing heating systems. These Hybrid solutions represent a critical step in the transition toward a fully electric future.

There are also electric heat pump water heaters now being adopted as part of this transition strategy.

Note for Homes with Boilers:
Although air-to-water heat pump options exist, there are currently limited choices that can match the capacity of typical natural gas boilers. In some compact homes, fully electric boilers have been installed successfully. However, for most households, the recommended approach is to add ductless heat pumps alongside the existing boiler system while keeping an eye on evolving technology options.

Electrical Capacity Considerations:
Many homes may not yet have the hydro capacity required to support a fully electric hybrid heat pump system, an electric water heater, and a future electric vehicle. Even 200-amp service might not be sufficient in larger homes. To know with certainty, we recommend that you contact your local utility, as they can provide you with a 12-month hourly peak load report for a small fee. This data will help you understand your current usage patterns and plan effectively for any necessary electrical upgrades.

2023 is the year that we begin in earnest the biggest transition in residential heating since the introduction of neighbourhood natural gas distribution, and the term “Heat Pump” becomes common for homeowners around Toronto looking for ways to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

Government rebates that commenced on Jan 1, 2023 now allow up to $6500 for qualifying systems. While there are some all-electric heat pumps for homes that have lower heat requirements, the majority of systems that are both available and practical will be Gas / Electric Hybrid systems. Think of the heat pump as a first stage of heat before the gas equipment kicks in.

Central air-to-air heat pump “Hybrid” units replace outdoor central air conditioners and act as a first stage of heat with a gas furnace in forced-air homes. Ductless air-to-air heat pumps can run alongside your existing furnace or boiler. These types of Hybrid solutions will be the transition systems that take us through to the all-electric / (maybe hydrogen) future. There are also electric heat pump water heaters that can qualify for up to a further $1300 rebate.

A note for homes with boiler systems: while there are some air-to-water heat pumps in the market, there currently are few boilers available that will replace the capacity of a typically sized natural gas boiler. In some small homes we have already installed all-electric boilers, however, for the majority of us, it is best to utilize ductless heat pumps to run alongside your existing natural gas boiler system and wait for your options to increase over time.

It is unlikely that you will have enough hydro capacity for an all-electric hybrid heat pump system, electric water heater, and in the not-so-distant future, electric vehicle. For some larger homes, a 200-amp service may not be enough, so it’s good to get out in front of these issues. Electrical service upgrades to your home from the time of a deposit and signed contract take a minimum of 2-3 weeks to get scheduled with Toronto Hydro, and, in the peak of the summer, this period could be even longer.

Choosing a Heat Pump as Your Primary Heating Solution

When it comes to selecting the ideal heating solution for your home, heat pumps have emerged as a frontrunner in terms of efficiency, versatility, and eco-friendliness.

How to Choose the Right HVAC Contractor

When you replace your HVAC system, the type of unit you get is only part of the decision-making process. You also need to choose a reputable HVAC contractor to install it for you.

Heat Pumps Explained

Did you know that while air conditioners and heat pumps are essentially the same in cooling mode, they are entirely different when it comes to heating? Air conditioners only provide cooling, but heat pumps can heat and cool your home!

Toronto’s Heating Repair Experts

"I used Air Management Group Inc to replace a broken humidifier in our home. Fernando was my first contact who took the time to understand the issue and provide me with viable options. I decided to replace instead of repair. Bill showed up promptly as scheduled to replace the unit. He was knowledgeable, efficient and ensured everything was working properly. I would recommend Air Management and would happily use them again."

"Fernando and the Team of Air Management Group were incredible; from the quote to the final follow up call to make sure everything was running perfectly. I have dealt with many contractors and HVAC companies in the past but none of these come close to the level of professionalism and care that Air Management Group consistently shows. They truly treated me like a VIP customer, not like another number as many companies do. I would highly recommend AMG for your next HVAC repair or installation, you will not be disappointed. Thank you again Fernando and the AMG team."
